The rain, the rain... the horror the horror!

Winter can be a torrid time for chickens. Most of my birds have feathered feet and the brahmas in particular are feathered heavily. As a result they are not keen on the rain and less so the mud. Unfortunately a part of our garden is under deciduous trees and now that we have chickens and at this time of the year, there isn't a lot growing in the soil except ferns (and the birds have sorted those out for this year).

I try to find areas for them to hang out in when it is particularly wet but it isn't easy when the water is even pooling on the grass. Whilst a few of them seem wise to the weather (particularly the older generation) a number don't have  a good deal of bird sense. The silkies of course are ruined in the rain as their beautiful fluffy feathers don't keep out the wet at all.



Here is a shot of some of them feeding under the trees in the rain. Their food containers get filthy almost as soon as they are washed and put back down!
